This is a phrase I hear very often. A lot of Christians seem to feed not on the Word of God but on what their pastors say. I usually ask these folks where in the Bible is what they claimed is true and 95% of the time their answers are, “I don’t know, but my pastor says….”
Friends, it is written clearly that eventually there will be 5 wise virgins and 5 foolish ones. The apostle John also tells us in 1 John that false prophets are already out. Peter tells us so as well in 2 Peter and Jude too. They don’t even need to be false – just erroneous teaching will cause you a lot of pain and drain.
Guess where are these false prophets and false teachers? On the streets and in the marketplace? Maybe, but I think they are in churches. They don’t have to be dramatic or charismatic. They just need to appear like you and I. So, beware.
I don’t know much about Church history but I think the Protestant Church was birthed because Martin Luther studied the Bible and received the revelation that the just shall live by faith. Yes, love your pastors and honor God’s anointed ones AND, don’t just read the Bible BUT study it. You’ll find gems. Don’t believe? Try checking the root words of these and you might find their meaning very different from what you think:
- Bear each other’s burden
Let’s do what Paul exhorts, in 2 Tim 2:15, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
